Question:

I need information on drugs used in the care and treatment of individuals with HIV/AIDS, where can I start?

If you are interested in finding out what and how drugs are used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, a good place to begin is the Johns Hopkins Medical Management of HIV Infection.

  1. From the CHAIN Home Page, select Library.

  2.
  3. Scroll down the page and under the Book section, select Medical Management of HIV Infection.

  4.
  5. Chapter III, "Disease Prevention: Prophylactic Antimicrobial Agents and Vaccines", provides guidelines for the use of drugs in the prevention of opportunistic infections.

  6.
  7. Chapter IV, "Antiretroviral Therapy", covers the antiretroviral agents and recommendations for their use.

  8.
  9. Chapter VI, "Drugs: Guide to Information",offers information about specific drugs including dosage forms & price, relevant clinical trials data, side effects, drug interactions, cautions, and contact info for patient assistance programs.

Next you can return to the CHAIN Home Page and click on the Links option.

  2.
  3. Links are provided to Guidelines via the AIDS Treatment Information Service site (mentioned earlier) and the Medscape site.

  4.
  5. A link to the online periodical "AIDS Treatment News" is also present, and this resource offers information on new drugs and relevant updates on currently used drugs.
